Buy a cloud! While you lie on the grass and watch the passing clouds, you are tempted to purchase one. The transaction takes place via a virtual speculation market linked to an app and website. Every step of your cloud acquisition is justified by a standard land ownership contract and all certificates are archived in the online map cadastre. With rising carbon emissions, cumulus clouds are in danger of disappearing within 100 years. Catastrophic for the planet but good for the cloud market as all markets are based on scarcity and demand. Buycloud is about the transformation of “natural phenomena” into “exploitable resources”. It shows the dominant Western thinking about how ownership and exploitation is attached to one of the last phenomena that remain outside these systems. Noa Jansma is an activist designer and investigates our mutual relationship with the more-than-human world. This results in projects on, among other things, food, capitalism, ecological awareness, colonialism and urban-rural dynamics.
