Carefully and meditatively, the artist bakes pink pancakes and sorts them in a pyramid of drying racks. Her assembled outfit and equipment fit perfectly with the enigmatic ritual she performs. Everything is right in this colorful and self-designed world, but the controlled ideal also shows the lonely side of her one-person universe. This alienating act is part of How to Make a Living, a series of performances in which the artist expresses paradoxical feelings about feasibility, individualism and autonomy in her characteristic absurdist visual language. Maaike Fransen dreams with her hands and designs the world around her.
