Fantasy characters enter the foreground from a dim depth. During the production process they develop into autonomous, complex beings and present an alternative reality. The AI-film shows a similarity with trans identity in which reality and fantasy merge. From a disturbing complexity, it raises questions about the self and other, desire and repulsion, model and replica and appearance versus real. Make of Me is inspired by the Uncanny Valley-theory, the hypothesized relationship between the extent to which a humanoid resembles an actual human and the negative emotional response such a humanoid evokes. Jun Ortega makes films and audiovisual installations in which identities and simulations play a major role. They not only examines gender relations but also in a broader sense the self and the other, desire and repulsion, model and replica and appearance versus real.
